Premium Wood Finish
NMT’s flawless finish begins with surface preparation. Because a finish is only as good as the readied surface, the top layers are sanded down, then sanded between each coat, ensuring full penetration deep into the wood.
The varnish NMT has carefully chosen combines several wood finishing products that allow us to hand rub a mirror-like finish by applying one coat at a time while re-prepping the wood’s surface after each coat. The last and final layer is a full strength coat of an outdoor varnish, brushed on by hand. This not only gives a beautiful mirror finish, but also gives the dobsonian a durable skin that will stand up to all the dew, sunlight, frost you care to throw at it. It may look delicate, but don’t be fooled. This is a rough and tumble finish that is hardier than its good looks elude to and is distinctive to New Moon Telescopes.
Our recommendation is to finish the Baltic Birch naturally, however, we will gladly stain your telescope one of four colors upon request.
Whether you choose to the stain or natural finish, NMT always utilizes high gloss varnish during the build-up to the final coat so the wood grain is highlighted instead of hidden. Customers are empowered to choose their top coat, available in satin, semi-gloss or high gloss. Each of these finishes will offer the same durability, beauty and superior quality a New Moon Telescope is known for.
